Types of Genetic Birth Defects

According to The March of Dimes six percent of all global births that have occurred will be a birth containing a genetic birth defect. That’s nearly eight million babies across the world that will be born at a disadvantage. Couple that with staggering number of genetic and partially-genetic birth defects that exist (over 7,000) and it’s easy to see why this is such an important issue for the medical community. Even though there are so many different individual genetic and partially-genetic defects we’ve been able to slim them down to five common types that represent over 25% of the genetic defects born to children throughout the world. Genetic Birth Defects Explained With Examples

While we may be aware of the easy living that a pregnant woman is expected to do, it’s never easy to except that sometimes a baby can be born with a congenital birth defect regardless of what preventive measures were taken to insure their health.   Enter genetics. You see, we’re all nothing more than clusters of cells, billions and billions of clusters. Each cell houses our genetic information, commonly known as a gene. Genetic Birth Defects

Genetic birth defects are something which we are all aware of and always hope against when there is a pregnancy. While there are a myriad of birth defects and around 8 million babies born with birth defects per year worldwide with 120,000 cases in the United States per year, the top 5 most common forms of birth defects according to WebMD are as follows: Heart defects, Neural tube defects, Blood disorders, Down syndrome and G6PD deficiency. Birth defects can be more than just these most commonly known disorders, as abnormalities and mutations in-utero also have the commonality of being genetic, even if neither parent nor grandparent shows any sign of abnormality or mutation.
