Types of Genetic Birth Defects
According to The March of Dimes six percent of all global births that have occurred will be a birth containing a genetic birth defect. That’s nearly eight million babies across the world that will be born at a disadvantage. Couple that with staggering number of genetic and partially-genetic birth defects that exist (over 7,000) and it’s easy to see why this is such an important issue for the medical community. Even though there are so many different individual genetic and partially-genetic defects we’ve been able to slim them down to five common types that represent over 25% of the genetic defects born to children throughout the world. Those five types are: Blood Disorders: Diseases such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia round out this list which are prevalent in over 307,000 births worldwide per year.
